Mechanic/Secretary/Trainer
JOB DESCRIPTION
QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Must have or be able to obtain an Alabama CDL “A” or “B” class license with a “P” and “S” endorsement within six (6) months of employment.
Completion of a Certified Mechanic Apprenticeship, or written verification of four (4) years experience as an assistant mechanic in a school bus shop.
Possess a working knowledge of Word, Excel, and other computer programs and be able to maintain records.
Ability to communicate verbally and in writing with other employees and the public.
Must have a clean MVR and be insurable and meet Department of Transportation (DOT) physical qualifications.
Must be eligible to become a certified school bus driver trainer as prescribed by the Alabama Department of Education.
Must meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure under the Alabama child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457.
Must pass and be subject to random drug/alcohol testing as required by federal and state law and Opp BOE policies regarding drug/alcohol testing, operating school-owned/leased vehicles and transporting students.

JOB GOAL
To be an effective and positive force in the safe transportation of all Opp City School children.
SUPERVISES:
School Bus driver trainees
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
*Serve as transportation secretary with duties that may include answering the telephone, writing/maintaining reports, data entry, maintaining inventory/parts/property records, typing reports, and filing.
*Perform a wide variety of tasks requiring and understanding and proficiency of mechanical repair.
*Diagnose and repair vehicle problems.
*Physically able to use heavy tools and equipment as well as having the physical dexterity, mobility, and strength to stoop, bend, lift, reach, and climb as needed to perform the essential functions of this position.
*Maintain safety standards at all times.
*Assume responsibility for the proper use of all parts received.
*Maintain work hours in accordance with board policy.
*Maintain good working relationships with drivers and other school personnel.
*Report any abuse of vehicles and/or equipment to the shop foreman.
*Accept and complete foreman’s assigned job and overall supervision.
*Teach/train proper pre-trip inspection procedures and safe driving rules with prospective employees as prescribed by the State Department of Education.
*Maintain a professional relationship with trainees
*Instruct new employees as to steps required to procure a commercial driver license and State of Alabama School Bus certificate.
*Assist in the recruitment and recommendations of new drivers.
*Conduct a continuing driver training and traffic safety program.
*Assist the Transportation supervisor with the evaluation of school bus drivers and school bus aides.
*Be available to substitute on a route when the need arises.
*Be on call for after-hours duties.
*Assist with routing and/or routing changes assigned by the superintendent or his/her designee.
*Perform other tasks as may be required.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Salary and benefits will be paid consistent with the system’s approved compensation plan. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the system.

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the board’s policy on evaluation of personnel.
