Building Based Student Support Team (BBSST)

The BBSST is a team of teachers, counselors, and administrators who work together to improve the academics or behavior of students who are in need of assistance. This is not a special education process, but must be completed prior to a special education referral.

This team meets once each month to address the needs of students who have been referred. The team members assist in the identification of the problem of a student, then brainstorm solutions until an intervention is set into place for each student. Classroom teachers implement these interventions, then provide periodic feedback to the BBSST team to determine the effectiveness of the interventions. In addition to the members of the BBSST team, students, parents, nurses, former resource teachers, and referring teachers are often called in to take part in the meetings.

BBSST is mandated by the Alabama State Department of Education. For more information, see the Department of Education's website (Click Here).
